The need we identified in online stores
BOX NOW has become a particularly popular shipping option for Greek online stores.
But what happens when an online store sells heavier products and an order needs to be split into multiple parcels?
The official BOX NOW plugin for WooCommerce does not calculate shipping charges based on the total cart weight. This makes sense as a general approach, since the service is priced according to locker size and packing practices vary from business to business.
For many online stores, however, this creates a very specific need.
A heavy order may require more than one parcel, even though only a single shipping charge has been calculated at checkout.
The result?
The business often ends up absorbing the additional shipping cost.
From a real problem to a new solution
We encountered this issue first-hand in online stores we develop and support.
Rather than look for yet another workaround, we decided to create our own solution.
That led us to develop BOX NOW Advanced Weight Rules, an independent WooCommerce add-on that works alongside the official BOX NOW plugin.
Its purpose is simple: to give online store owners control over shipping charges when an order’s total weight exceeds the limits they have set.
How does it work?
BOX NOW Advanced Weight Rules automatically calculates the actual total cart weight, taking into account both the weight and quantity of each product.
It then applies the rules configured for that online store and shipping destination.
For example, an online store based in Greece can set:
Shipping within Greece
up to 20 kg → base shipping charge
20–40 kg → double the charge
40–60 kg → triple the charge
Shipping from Greece to Cyprus
up to 4 kg → base shipping charge
4–8 kg → double the charge
8–12 kg → triple the charge
The limits above are an example configuration and are not general BOX NOW pricing rules. Each online store can set its own limits based on its products, packing practices and shipping needs.
Different rules for Greece and Cyprus
One of the solution’s key features is that the same rules do not have to apply to every destination.
A Greek online store may have different requirements for a shipment within Greece than for a shipment from Greece to Cyprus.
BOX NOW Advanced Weight Rules lets you set different weight limits by country or shipping zone and automatically adjusts the shipping charge at checkout.
This gives store owners greater control over shipping charges and reduces the number of orders where the business ends up absorbing the actual shipping cost.
The plugin’s logic adapts to your online store—not the other way around.
No changes to the official BOX NOW plugin
From the outset, we wanted the solution to be as safe and independent as possible.
That is why BOX NOW Advanced Weight Rules does not replace the official BOX NOW plugin.
It works alongside it, handling this specific calculation logic at the WooCommerce checkout without requiring any changes to the official plugin’s files.
This avoids the common problem of a future update to the main plugin overwriting custom code changes.
Built to meet real-world eCommerce needs
For us, this is the most important aspect of the project.
BOX NOW Advanced Weight Rules did not start as an abstract idea for yet another WordPress plugin.
It started with a real problem faced by online store owners.
We analysed it as developers, translated it into specific WooCommerce logic and created a solution that can be tailored to the needs of different online stores.
